Kingmakers helps groups find, play, and experience games together. We take this work – like you’d suspect board game enthusiasts would – a bit seriously. We have two game parlours - in Columbus, Ohio and Indianapolis, Indiana that showcase our library of games (our wall of games make for some legendary Instagram photos).
The real magic of Kingmakers comes from pairing our TEAM and our METHODOLOGY.
Our team is a passionate group of people who absolutely love to teach games and who bring that passion to work every day. Some of our teammates have other full-time jobs but teach games at Kingmakers out of passion. In the way a wine sommelier (suh-muhl-yei) uses their deep expertise in wine to help create pairings for dishes at a restaurant, our team uses a deep expertise in games to help pair the perfect game with the right size, attitude, and experience that a group is looking for.
Our Methodology of Gameplay
Our team PRACTICES TEACHING games! There are a lot of people who KNOW games inside and out, but our team has a methodology of teaching them. Before our Game Guides hit the floor to work with a group, they must be able to teach at least 14 different games of varying types. It’s basics include--
- Ensure the group is comfortable
- Identify group size
- Identify games that members are Familiar with
- Identify mood or level of complexity
- Select 3-5 Games from the Game Library to Pair with the Group
- Introduce games
- Group decides on which they’d like to start with
- Teach game and get the group playing
- Visit back to answer questions and help keep everyone up to speed
- Once finished, decide to play the same game or try out another
What about a date night without phones?
A COUPLE WALKS INTO KINGMAKERS FOR A DATE: They’ve both had a long day at work, and neither is really UP for a deeply concentrated game because they’d like to have some nice conversation while they play.
Our Game Guides pair them with a lite and easy-to-digest game (like Colour Birds) to allow them to experience something new together while also allowing them to ask about their day, sip their drinks, and maybe get lost in conversation a time or two.

A TEAM DECIDES TO COME IN AT 4:45 FOR A HAPPY HOUR. 8 teammates ranging in time with the company, alcohol preferences, and board game comfortability sit down to hang out. They’re familiar with each other, but they’re more coworkers than friends (you know what I mean). Our Game Guide listens to them, brings them some snacks and drinks (a local beer, tea, 2 glasses of wine, a water, and 2 bottles of Bud Light for the 8 of them). After taking a survey of what games others are familiar with, our Game Guide pulls together...

Meet the Owner: Malika Jacobs
Malika Jacobs started Kingmakers in 2014 after experiencing how board games could bring together groups for herself. While traveling to visit friends, the group brought her along to a bar and decided to start playing some board games while they caught up. With a deep experience in operations and experience creation (working inside of the Northstar restaurant group), she decided to combine her experience there, her love of gathering, and her experience at Ohio State’s Fisher MBA program to create a business.
Malika knows that Kingmakers success and growth isn’t about her, but about a community. In the same way that Kingmakers helps bring people together over board games, Malika’s community has rallied around the business to provide support, guidance, and community.
“I've been having a love affair with Kingmakers.”
“Long have my friends and I desired such a place.”
“They have an entire wall of floor-to-ceiling games.”
